Updated from last year.
To the reader of previews: This really is important. Please read this, and all the way through.
I don't know how many people out there know of Terry Pratchett and his Discworld books, but the aforementioned writer is one of the best in the world– in fact, he was knighted.
But as with everything else good, it comes to an end. Pratchett was diagnosed with early Alzheimers, a fatal disease which kills only after complete loss of memory.
My grandmother was killed by Alzheimers.
I can tell you personally, it was one of the– if not the absolute– worst experience of my life. Seeing her slowly fade, knowing that one day she would look at my face and not recognize it. And when that day came, knowing that she was not all that long for this world. But she lingered, and we never knew what sudden bursts of memory would occur, and when she wouldn't know anyone. The worst part was that a few days before she passed on, she had one of those bursts of memories, and remembered my name and face.
It's a terrible, terrible disease.
But God, why did it have to strike Terry Pratchett?
Anyway. The reason for this journal is that there's an awareness campaign started by fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. If anyone's ever read his book "Night Watch," all the old soldiers and cops who had fought at Treacle Mine Road (Truth! Justice! Freedom! Reasonably Priced Love! And a hard boiled egg!) wore a lilac on the 25th of May to remember.
Wear the Lilac Day took the day to remember Alzheimers. They're selling artificial lilacs, all proceeds to go to Alzheimers research.
Now, citizens of gaiaonline have taken note of this, and are taking the opportunity to spread Alzheimers awareness, but I decided I needed to tell my personal story.
I'm asking you to all remember this, and to wear purple or a lilac sprig on the 25th of May. If anyone notices, tell them why.
Please spread the word.
Thank you.
Here's the link to the gaia thread for this year, which isn't quite set up yet, but being updated:
